IPTV Set-Top-Box, Headend Equipment and Middleware Markets to Reach $1.5 Billion in 2013

Bethesda, MD, January 23, 2006 – According to recently released report from Dittberner Associates Inc. the IPTV market for set-top-boxes, headend equipment and middleware will reach $1.5 Billion in 2013.

“The Headend equipment market will be rather small, only reaching $176 Million. This is in line with developments in digital TV transmission, which will allow for more centralized processing and encoding of TV signals than in the past” reports James Heath, Director, Broadband research at Dittberner, and the author of the just published report “IPTV Impact on Public Networks.” He added that “although the IPTV middleware market has many players and will continue to be dynamic, today it is largely dependent on the Microsoft’s IPTV Edition success in public networks.” The total Set Top Box market in 2013 is estimated to reach $744 Million.

Forecasts for these three market segments in 2013 are shown in Table 1.

The report concludes that the Headend equipment market’s total size depends heavily on the number of subscribers serviced by each Headend. The set-top-box market is influenced by the shift to HDTV viewing and the inclusion of Digital Video Recorder capability in the set-top-box. The broadband access infrastructure needs to be upgraded in virtually every market to begin to offer quality TV services. The positive aspect is that once the infrastructure is upgraded, the incremental cost to the service provider to offer IPTV services is low.
