Dittberner Forecasts Worldwide Internet Traffic Backbone Capacity
to Reach 84.2 Tbps in 2008
The Worldwide Internet
Backbone Capacity will Grow at a Cumulative
Average Annual Growth Rate of 61% from
2001 to 2008.
Washington, D.C.- April
15, 2002 - According to its newly released
report titled "High Performance Routers
and Multiservice Switches for Public Networks,"
Dittberner Associates finds that the worldwide
Internet backbone capacity will grow from
3.7 Tbps in 2001 to 84.2 Tbps in 2008,
signifying a CAGR of 61%.
These statistics are derived
from Dittberner's exhaustive analyses of potential
Internet traffic growth by using three
unique modeling approaches: Internet traffic
forecast based on peak-hour average bandwidth
per application (US and Rest of World);
the average online hold-time approach
(US and Rest of World); and based on Dr.
Roberts' Internet traffic growth prediction.
"Great divergence exists in Internet
traffic forecasts," states Donald
Dittberner, editor-in-chief and President
of Dittberner. "Dittberner Associates' consensus
view is that an increase of roughly 80
- 90% annually is likely for the next
4 - 5 years, and then decrease somewhat."
