Dittberner new report provides an in-depth analysis of the emerging
technologies for optical switching equipment
While Backbone Traffic
in Industrialized Countries continues
to grow 50 to 70% annually, the market
growth for optical backbone infrastructure
equipment will not reach the level of
the late 1990s during the current decade,
mostly due to decreasing equipment prices.
Washington, DC - August
12, 2002 - Dittberner Associates' new
report titled "Optical Switching
and its Impact on Public Networks"
provides an in-depth analysis of the emerging
technologies for optical switching equipment
and its role in the future telecommunications
transport infrastructure.
"All-optical (photonic)
cross-connect switches have the potential
of reducing CAPEX by over 50% and OPEX
by up to 85%. However, acceptance of these
switches will be rather slow - O-E-O switches
while more expensive, still provide superior
capabilities and higher flexibility and
will be the choice of most carriers for
at least another one or two years. However,
remotely configurable all-optical ADMs
will find applications much earlier,"
says Dr. Lorenz
Beug, Vice President of Technology
& Network Planning.
Of the 30 optical switches
reviewed in the report, only seven are
all-optical (O-O-O) switches while 23
are of the O-E-O type. Only a handful
of these systems have more than 50 units
installed to date.
