Softswitch Annual Sales to Reach US$2.8 Billion by 2010 for Public Networks

Washington DC. July 25, 2001

A new report just released from Dittberner Associates, one of the leading consulting firms in the world specializing in telecommunications, has concluded there is reason for long term optimism in the area of Voice over Packet switching equipment sales.

While worldwide annual sales of softswitches during 2001 will only amount to US$487. million, the Dittberner report forecasts that by 2010 the sales will reach US$2.8 Billion. Additionally, the Dittberner forecast expects a cumulative total of 12,080 SoftSwitch systems to have been shipped by the year 2010 worldwide

On a similar note, the Dittberner Forecast for Cumulative Gateway System Sales Worldwide will be a total value of US$8.2 Billion.

Which market segments will be generating these sales? The Dittberner report divides the market into the various major carrier classes: Incumbent, Cable, Competitive Carriers, and Wireless. Both wireless and cable operators will take up slightly more than 10% each of this forecast, with the remainder divided between the incumbent and competitive carriers.

While most traditional telecommunication companies recognize that VoIP is the wave of the near future, this by no means suggests that they will start introduction of VoIP services soon. The PSTN will be around for at least another decade, if not more. Although carriers will continue to make very limited investments in circuit switched voice to ensure QoS standards, the majority of the new capital investments will go into next generation VoP networks of various types.

The Dittberner report includes over 15 detailed market forecasts of gateway and SoftSwitch sales. These forecasts are for each year for the next 10 years, by # of systems, by dollar value, and the cumulative # of systems for the US, the rest of the world and the total world market. Additionally, these forecasts are divided into the class of carrier which will be purchasing the equipment as referred to earlier.
