Gateways Help ATM in the Battle between ATM and IP for Universal Dominance

March 10, 2000 - Washington D.C. According to switching expert, Donald Dittberner, "In the ongoing debate between which protocol will dominate the backbone infrastructure of an integrated voice and data network, ATM clearly has won. In contrast to IP, ATM networks can provide QoS and other performance guarantees for each connection. It further offers special services for a variety of applications and different modes of transport for packetized voice."

Further aid to ATM in this battle is the support of major switching equipment vendors. According to the report "Next Generation Switching Systems for Public Networks" published by Dittberner Associates, Inc, " Several of the world's leading equipment vendors have either introduced or announced network elements that support inter working between traditional narrow band local telephone exchange on the one side and a universal ATM backbone network on the other side. This inter networking is possible through special gateways between the TDM and the ATM networks as well as call servers that provide the connection control. Gateways are designed to support TDM as well as IP interfaces and therefore can accept Internet access traffic in addition to voice traffic."

In a few years MPLS (Multi Protocol Label Switching) may well prove an easy replacement for ATM in the backbone for those telecom service providers who have been wise choosing ATM equipment employing programmable network processors.
