Our Broadband Access Research Program helps both telecom equipment vendors and service providers to understand and take advantage of opportunities in various specific broadband-based access markets: xDSL Access, Cable Modems, Integrated Multi-Service Access Platforms, and Fixed Broadband Wireless Access.

This Research Program focuses on technologies, applications and status of the use of advanced access techniques to provide broadband services from the public carrier networks of the world. The survey is presented as an interactive tool created to analyze the growth in broadband globally. DITTBERNER analyzed 350 service providers in 65 countries, which represents 90% of the world's population and over 95% of all broadband subscribers. The information recorded for each country in this survey includes:

  • The number of broadband subscribers by access technology
  • The number of fixed telephone lines
  • The number of PCs
  • Basic cable TV subscriber.

All of this information and more can be found in the various interactive spreadsheets in this Excel workbook. The interactivity has been devised to provide customizable tables and charts for personal analysis.

Growth scenarios are provided for each of the access technologies. The parameters and constraints used to develop these models are described allowing detailed understanding of the basis of each forecast. For example, the bases for the access technology scenarios were:

  • ADSL - Identified the fixed lines in the telephony infrastructure that had been installed. This placed an upper limit on the possible ADSL subscribers that could be served
  • Cable Modems -Identified the number of Homes Passed with a cable TV infrastructure capable of two-way transmission. This placed an upper limit on the number of possible cable Modem customers.
  • FTTB - Identified the number of dwelling units passed and marketed by a fiber network. This placed an upper limit on the number of FTTB subscribers possible.
  • FTTH - Identified the number of dwelling units passed and marketed by a fiber network. This placed an upper limit on the number of FTTH subscribers possible.
  • UTP/FTP LAN - Identified the number of dwelling units passed and marketed by a UTP/FTP LAN. This placed an upper limit on the number of UTP/FTP LAN subscribers possible.

These scenarios cover the period of 2008-2017.
